Work Integrated Learning

The fastest way to close the experience gap

Work Integrated Learning is structured, supported work experience with a real employer — the bridge between having a qualification and being genuinely job-ready. Here's why it matters in South Africa, and how ShiftMate uses it to turn potential into a paycheck.

The South African digital skills crisis

It isn't a skills gap. It's an experience gap.

Thousands of talented young South Africans have qualifications in a range of digital skills but lack workplace experience — and therefore work opportunities — whilst countless digital jobs remain unfilled. Recent research puts the picture in sharp focus: South Africa has roughly 318,000 ICT jobs with a vacancy rate of about 27.2%, meaning over 86,000 digital positions sit empty. Encouragingly for young job-seekers, around 35% of those vacancies are at the junior level — close to 41,500 entry-level opportunities.

The most in-demand roles are software developers, web developers and IT support technicians. Junior ICT professionals can expect to earn around R25,000 a month — a salary that can be genuinely transformative. Yet a paradox persists: thousands of digital jobs remain unfilled while qualified young people struggle to secure their first opportunity. Employers need candidates who can hit the ground running; graduates need that crucial first chance to prove themselves.

The solution is Work Integrated Learning

The challenge isn't only about technical skills — it's about bridging the experience gap. That's where Work Integrated Learning becomes critical: providing young talent with structured, supported work experience that develops both technical proficiency and the essential workplace skills employers value most — problem-solving, communication, and adaptability. WIL turns a theoretical qualification into demonstrated, real-world competence.
